Duke of Monmouth
Following his execution, according to tradition, it was realised only too late that there was no official portrait of the Duke - for someone who had claimed the throne, albeit in vain, this was unheard of. So his body was exhumed, the head stitched back on the body, and it was sat for its portrait to be painted.
The theory that the Duke of Monmouth was in fact The Man in the Iron Mask seems to be based on the reasoning that James II would not execute his own nephew; someone else was executed instead; and James II arranged for Monmouth to be taken to France and put in the custody of Louis XIV of France.

Fact Number 1: That is a good idea. When are you in Bath next? I'm saving up to do a BA in History specialising in Religious History. I wish I did not do a BEd when left school. Me a teacher! Ha! I spent the whole time going to rock clubs and playing Kick off

Intent on strengthening the Church of England and reaffirming the Buggery Act 1533, James adopted a severe stance towards sodomy. His book on kingship, Basilikon Doron 1598, lists sodomy among those “horrible crimes which ye are bound in conscience never to forgive.”

Buggery and sodomy. Just the sound they make when you say them sounds filthy & evil!
